"The ABCs of E-Reading"
Here is the link for "The ABCs of E-Reading" by Fowler and Baca. How many of you own Kindles or read e-books on your iPod or tablet? How do you prefer to experience books, now that so many options are available?
Just for fun, and to supplement our discussion on books vs. e-books, here is a New York Times article that compares the environmental impact of books vs. E-readers:
"How Green is My iPad?" by Daniel Coleman and Gregory Norris
And finally, this graphic sums up how I feel about real books! Is anyone else as nerdy as I am??

I like reading no matter what source the story is from. I do like the feel of a book in my hand, and I like adding notes or papers to my books. But if I could go to school without carrying 100 lb. books would be nice on my back. But, if I have an electronic, I'm very tempted to play games on it, so maybe I should stick to the hard copies of books.

For my personal reading I prefer an actual book, for school I prefer online so I can gather any info required quickly. I do not own an e-reader and probably wont ever own one.

I carried a Kindle through 2 tours in Afghanistan, 2 tours in Iraq, and through 3 months is Haiti. Not because I love technology but because I was able to bring hundreds of books with me around the world and they all weighed under a pound. I absolutely love it! I even bought one for every member of my family. That being said, I still love paper books, but when it comes down to it I don't want anyone knowing what I'm reading most of the time because it is none of their business. I do think it is very stupid that I have to turn off a device that is based off of the technology that brought us the etch-a-sketch when my plane wants to take off or land.

I'm surprised that a kindle could survive that much abuse. I agree with you that it is nice not to be judged by what your reading, especially when your traveling.
DeleteI enjoyed this article. As someone who is not an avid reader I haven't spent much time thinking about E-readers, so it was interesting to read the different sides to it. I love the fact that we have the technology to pull up any kind of text on our mobile phones or laptops that we want. I don't enjoy reading books per say, but I do spend a lot of time reading news articles or fact-lets on my iphone whilst trying to get to sleep. So I guess the existence of todays technology has benefitted me.

With me, this time I read in web of my language, I am not yet check e-books. When I read in here, I just try to read printed books because I like to touch in the papers of books but if I go far, I will choose e-book.

I would rather read out of printed books jsut because it is what we have had for over long periods of time. Reading e-books things may happen say if you drop it and the screen cracks on your iPad, nook or kindle then how would you read with a cracked screen vs. a book if you drop it nothing really happens. The most that could probably happen is that you lose your place.

I don't own an e-reader, but I have read on my friends. I didn't like it as much as I do a traditional book. I Like how online books are a lot cheaper compared to hard copies though.
ReplyDeleteI don't own an e-reader either, but I read books on my iPhone pretty often. That being said, I much prefer books because they are easier for me to read and I can actually annotate them and add my own comments and notes. I also like the new book smell (: But the electronic books can have some perks such as having the ability to have so many books with so little weight!
ReplyDeleteI do not own an e-reader, yet I find myself able to read from a large computer screen much faster and seem to be more connected to the material.

DeleteI have a nostalgia for original books. There is something about the way a real book feels in your hands, wont run out of batteries, and does not have an airplane mode switch that appeals to me. Tablet computing platforms have become so popular that someday I will probably buy one for the convenience of having a library in the palm of my hands. As technology advances they will become cheaper, more powerful, and more companies will try too crowed the market with niche market models. Wait long enough, and someday e-readers will be lighter then books and cost around the same.
ReplyDeleteThere are pro's about reading an actual book because it means more, brings good memories when you see the book. but there are also so many good things about e-readers. You can have book shelves in one little device. You are able to take it where ever you go with more books than one. E-readers are the up to date way to go.
ReplyDeleteTo me both styles of reading; electronically and physically, have their share of pro's and con's which make them both great. I enjoy using my e- reader because physically being able to carry 10 books in 1lb is simply amazing. However, I enjoy flipping through pages of a book while reading. Flipping through the pages as I go along makes as a progression status bar for me that keeps me motivated through out my reading. Overall I'd have to prefer reading an old fashioned hard copy book over a lcd display.
ReplyDeleteWill e-readers ever replace the paper book? This is the question that popped into my head as i read the article. I personally don't use and e-reader so i don't fully understand the advantages to having one but i can see how it can make the reading process quicker. It seems extremely convenient and practical. On the other hand no one can forget the joy of sitting behind a new book flipping the pages wanting to know what will happen and not have to worry about battery life.
