Here is Steven Pinker's op-ed article from The New York Times, "Mind Over Mass Media." Does anyone agree with Pinker that we are basically overreacting to the effects of new technology?
I do think that technology is very useful, and I have benefitted from it. But I have become very dependent on it, and it has become hard for me to take notes by hand. It's also very easy to only look at Internet quick sources instead of trying to find websites that have a good ethos. But, technology is continually updated, which is very important when we work in a world that depends on speed. Makenna F.
I agree with Pinker completely, the evolution of technology has increased everyone's ability to find things out right now. This may sound bad because they quickly skim through it and they are done, but if that was not available how many people would just say "oh well I guess we will never know" because I know I would. But now I just whip out my handy little smart phone, fire up the Google machine, and POOF! information. That being said, I do wish I could become more fierce by eating fierce animals. Tyler H.
I also agree with Steven Pinkers article. I think that the fact technology has developed so much is a brilliant thing for our society in many ways. I also thought exactly the same thing as Tyler when I read "search engines are encouraging us to skim the surface of knowledge rather than dive into its depths." I find if I come across a word I don't know I will pick up my iphone and immediately know the answer. But if I had to track down a dictionary and find the word, well it would never get done! I think I know so much more today than I would without the existence of technology. -Vicky H
I agree and disagree with Steven Pinker. I agree because I think right now people is dependence to technology, they don't believe in themselves. I disagree because technology need to develop, some problem we can't figure we can use it but don't dependence in technology in problem we can do that. --Uyen B.
I mostly agree with Pinker. New forms of media are always making it easier and quicker to pass along information, news stories, or say hi to distant friends. We may be becoming dependent on it, but the benefits far outweigh the downsides as long as we have media. ~Tym F.
I agree with steven pinker. nowadays people rely on new technology a lot. people are addictied to use it and they cannot do anything without it. however like this article said new technology gives us lots of new information and make people's life easy and comfortable. it also make us smart. -yoon k
I agree with what Steven Pinker has to say. People tend to depend a lot on technology these days. In his article he said something about technology is what's keeping us smarter. I was just wondering what would happen if all of that was taken away from us? - Justina M.
I think Pinker has some really good points. Technology is definitely making things easier nowadays, but I think that people are becoming too dependent on their electronics. I don't think that technology is making us smarter, in fact, I think it is dumbing us down.
I agree with Pinker. He makes a great statement that technology is what is keeping us smart. personally, I like the availability of everything at my fingertips. Any question I have, can readily be answered at any time.
some of what Pinker says I do agree with as in how new technology can help us in our day to day life's. I also agree that some people over react on technology these people are the ones that just don't like change and I am sure if we listen to them we would still be riding horses. the more we create new technology the faster the technology improves and it is here to stay. I do feel that we need to find restraint with the use of it people are just getting to dependent on it and losing the ability of communication or interaction with others. I see people texting other that are sitting right next to them instead of just talking to them. Keith E.
I think that technology has changed the way things operate these days. A great lot actually, I would not say it has completely changed the world but it sure does change the way us as human being function.

I think it's smart to be realistic about how things impact us and to look at issues from many angles. Pinker may be pointing the finger, or calling to action, parents to not only monitor their kids use, but also their own. -Kevin K.
Technology isn't the problem and never has been. The problem is how we use it and how we steer our future generation in which way to use it. It may be the next generation that is being engulfed by technology but it our generations responsibility to make sure we lead them in the right direction. As we get outdated so will technology and the next generation will find themselves in a similar situation and may rely on how they were brought up to make their own decisions.
just like everything else technology should be used in moderation. There are many documented health problems that relate to technology and computers. Over and under-reactions are important because they help balance themselves out.
We need to acknowledge what concerns there are about technology and use it to our advantage. If use technology as a tool to better our lives you cant go wrong.
Sometimes I agree with Pinker and say we're over reacting. Technology is a wonderful advancement which allows for us to get so much accomplished we couldn't have possibly done in the past. It does it primary purpose which is to ease the lives of humans, how can we not take advantage of this?
